"Have I mentioned I really love my Kindle" September 4, 2010 R. Nall (Denver, CO United States) That's what I said at breakfast this morning, while sitting at a Breakfast Inn table, reading the Saturday edition of the Denver Post.
A lot has already been written and I just want to add a few thoughts.
This thing rocks.
If you like reading, hate the idea of magazines and newspapers piling up in the house, want something that is portable and very user friendly, take advantage of Amazon's new pricing on this product and buy a Kindle. It is my first eReader and I have nothing to compare it to, except for the text on a computer screen. Of those two, there is no comparison - the eInk on the Kindle's screen is perfection and makes this the perfect reading device. Add the Kindle cover with the slide out light that is powered by the Kindle and you have a nice little device that does anything you may desire concerning an ebook. With just a little bit of fiddling it can handle any format. Do some simple searching about on the Internet and there are free applications to easily convert epub docs to the Kindle's mobi file format. There are also free applications to make the Kindle "Public Library Friendly."
Probably the best there is - but room for improvement September 4, 2010 A. Wiersch (Lantana, TX USA (near Dallas)) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I think the new Kindle is the best e-reader there is, but there is room for improvement.
Pros:
* Probably the best e-reader there is
* Nice, contrasty screen even though it's not as white as real paper
* The cover accessory with the light in it is very nice, though expensive
* Relatively inexpensive, especially the wi-fi only version
* Good battery life
* Good looking
* Lightweight
Cons:
* RESPONSIVENESS - my biggest gripe when using it. Just turning to the next page is usually OK, but when doing other things, like accessing menus and functions, the Kindle can become quite unresponsive and take a lot of time to update the screen or do what you're waiting for it to do.
* I worry about Amazon.com being able to remove stuff from your Kindle, at their whim, like they have done in the past - it would be like someone breaking into your house and removing a book from your shelf (with all your notes you had added) because they later determined you weren't suppose to have it.
* Can't loan books to other people like you can with some other e-readers

Great E-Reader September 4, 2010 JerryG The third generation Kindle (k3) has a wonderful screen. It is very "book-like" and, in fact, easier to read than most paperbacks and even many hardbacks. With its adjustable font type and size, words per line, and line spacing, most users should be able to customize the text to their liking.
After being charged and turned on, my k3 immediately locked on to 3g and downloaded the twenty books I had queued up for it as well as my complete archive list. Indexing was complete within a minute or two. My home wireless router was picked up by the wi-fi scan, and, after I entered its security key, my k3 connected, and I was able (via wi-fi) to surf the web, download a couple of books from my archives, and visit the Amazon store.
All functions of my k3 have worked flawlessly. My only complaint is that the keyboard and five-way controller are quite cramped for my large fingers, and, for this, I'm deducting one star.
Kindle3 Compact, Faster and Sharper September 4, 2010 prisrob (New England USA)
Everyone it seems was waiting for color and a touch screen for the Kindle3. Not gonna happen according to Jeff Bezos. For those of us who are Kindle owners already, this is a real step up. I have had a Kindle 2 for 18 months and love it. I read more on Kindle, still have some books but really prefer the Kindle.
The Kindle3 arrived in a very secure box, once opened I found my graphite Kindle 3G + WiFi eReader, power adapter, USB 2.0 cable, the rechargeable battery in place and a Quick start guide. I plugged it in and waited a few mins to have enough power to start the kindle to insert it into my red burgundy cover with an LED light. Fits snugly and looks great. The K3 is much more compact and has an ergonomic button placement. The reduced size also makes it lighter in weight- wowee- fits into any purse or bag. While the size is smaller the memory is twice as large. The Kindle 3G + WiFi has 4GB memory, which can carry up to 3500 books at a time. I have 194 books now and can share these books to the new owner of my old Kindle2. The battery life is advertised as up to one month, that is with the wireless turned off.
The K3 seems to have a more ergonomic design. The page turn buttons are still on both sides of the screen but are now just one-quarter of an inch wide and are labeled with > and < arrows instead of words. The buttons are easier to press and much quieter. The keyboard is smaller and the number buttons are found by pressing the symbol button;
The Home and Menu buttons are conveiently found near the bottom of the K3.
The screen has 50% more contrast and the pages turn faster. I can change the font type and line spacing. Ther eis also the addition of non english fonts. The PDF is so much betterm I can now highlight, and look up words in the disctionary. A plus for some is a password protection file. I selected the 3G and obtain my books via whispernet, but have the ability to use wifi. The K3, liek the K2 has the voice option. I like the k3 for menus.
The Kindle3 is my e-reader and the manner in which I read msot bnooks. I ahve many books on Archive and can download them anytime. Amazon automatically creates an Archived copy of my books. The K3 supports cross-platform sharing, so my duaghter who is the new owner of my Kindle 2 may read the same book or any of my 194 books. The technology synchronizes last page read and annotations. across The Kindle 3 has free access to AT&T WiFi networks. Audible audiobooks can now be download wirelessly.
Highly Recommended. prisrob 09-04-10
NOW IS THE TIME TO BUY A KINDLE September 4, 2010 Barry (Seattle) I have been sitting on the e-reader fence for quite a while. I have a couple of friends who have the Kindle 2 and are quite happy with it, but it didn't do much for me. I thought as a dedicated e-reader it was too expensive and the fonts weren't that great to look at. But when I saw the new Kindle I was ready to get off the fence. The price of the new Kindle Wi-Fi was only $139 so I pulled the trigger and got one. Now, a week later, I have to say I am more than pleased and more than surprised how functional a machine/process this is. It's simple to order books via the Kindle or a PC, it's great to read at home or on a bus, and I'm able to take a large number of books wherever I go. I don't know what else I could ask for, but I'm sure I'll find out as Amazon continues to improve this jewel. Kaizen is alive and well at Amazon.
