5 out of 5 stars Great improvements. And lower price? Double thumbs up   September 4, 2010
norse.view (norway)
After reading and spending some time adjusting settings and syncing with the 'old' white Kindle (intl. Ed) I really appreciate the improvements made to this version;
It is lighter, so easier to hold in one hand for a long, long time
Wifi instantly connects, and works better than spotty 3g coverage
Pageturns are indeed quicker, noticeably so

All collections and such transferred with ease from the old model (as well as synced pages from both the iPad and iPhone apps running alongside every now and then)

If you have wifi at home anyway and like to have a bit of a mixed backlog ready for reading, (or a few free zones around) then this version is for you - more money for the actual content

5 out of 5 stars The New Kindle is Better than Physical Books!   September 4, 2010

The new Kindle is my first e-reader and I was very excited to try it out, even though I was a bit skeptical about the device replacing books for me.
I'll keep this review short and sweet by saying that it performs beyond my expectations and I am very pleased with the Kindle, especially for only $139!
This is a dream to read on, the battery lasts forever, and it is light and comfortable to read with.
This will definitely be replacing paper books for me whenever possible. I can't recommend the Kindle highly enough for anyone who likes to read.
Five Stars!

PS - Amazon has also provided amazing customer service. My Kindle wasn't even suppose to ship until Sept. 4th, and it arrived on August 30th! Thanks Amazon!

Received my latest generation Wi-Fi Kindle last weekend. It keeps freezing and doing all sorts of funky things like failing to shut down no matter how long I press the power switch, going into continuous rebooting, reloading mode, and going completely blank. Customer service was quite polite and responsive -- they listened to my description of the problem and immediately told me they will be shipping me a replacement today. They want me to ship back my unit so that they can test it to see what is wrong.

Given the alacrity with which they decided to address my problem by sending me a new device and the rehearsed way they evaded my question about whether they were getting other similar complaints, I am wondering if there might be some quality control issues with the first batch of this new product.

1 out of 5 stars Defective Unit and NO Customer Satisfaction - Just Runaround   September 4, 2010

I was as Amazon put it "an early adopter" of Kindle. I had a generation one and loved it for two years until it locked up this past spring. I removed the battery hoping to run it down and reboot it but the display never changed and it remains locked up. According to the Tech rep I spoke with that model is no longer serviced. I would love to have that original Kindle working again but figured I could live with a new one and ordered a new generation 2 June 30, just before the release of the 3rd generation ones. I wasn't worried about having the very latest and figured gen 2 would be fine with me. I was wrong.

The unit has extreme trouble connecting to wireless in exactly the same places and conditions where my original one had little or no trouble (my home). With the first one I could buy a book and be reading it in less than a minute. Have had blog and newspaper subscriptions in the past.

This one tries for hours and can't connect. I even take it places to find better service and even when it shows 3 or more bars it has trouble connecting, although in those conditions it eventually will. I NEVER repeat NEVER had to take my original Kindle anywhere to try to get a connection. I always had one wherever I was, including at my home.

But more than that, the battery life on the new one is nowhere near advertised. With wireless on, I get about 24 hours. I contacted customer service via the contact page on the website, was told to call them, did so, and after about 10 days got an email response saying I should turn wireless off and sync once a day and my battery life would dramatically improve. Well, it didn't, at least in my opinion. It improved but only to somewhere around 72 hours with wireless completely off. That's nowhere near the advertised one month.

And I'm getting nothing but the runaround from Amazon customer reps (hesitate to call it customer service as it is anything but). A different person with every message, no continuity in the communication. They tell me to try something, I email them, a different rep emails me back and tells me to call but with no acknowledgment of my specific issues, just "sorry you are having trouble, call ..."

And the thing is, why should I have to change my behavior to adapt to this machine when my first Kindle was perfectly fine under these conditions (until it died)?

And their "solution" is completely unworkable. I can't sync once a day because the darn thing can't connect to the wireless. I can leave it for hours and come back to find it still trying to connect. Can't get to my archived files any quicker either.

I'm also concerned about construction quality with these things. I've read reviews comparing Kindle and iPad and one prorated the costs out based on usage over 3 years. How many are going to get 3 years out of a Kindle? My first locked up after just 2. And this new unit is clearly defective but Amazon so far won't admit it.

I was so, so "SOLD" on Kindle, a big fan. My husband joked to co-workers that it (my original one) was going to permanently attach to my hand. And that would've been fine with me! Until it quit working, and now I've got this malfunctioning unit and nothing but a runaround from Amazon. And I've been a loyal Amazon customer since the mid-90's, back when they were just an online bookseller.
'
I've had problems in the past and got super service from Amazon -- e.g., a very expensive boxed set of videos came with one tape out of the set defective. I didn't even have to return the original set before Amazon had a new one on the way with a return label for the original ones. That's the kind of service I USED to get from Amazon. I really expected when I explained the really, really short battery life I was getting on this Kindle for the rep to immediately admit my unit must be defective and offer to have it looked at or replaced. I can't believe this lack of service. I have now asked Amazon to repair or replace this unit and I will report back if I get an answer.

5 out of 5 stars "Have I mentioned I really love my Kindle"   September 4, 2010

That's what I said at breakfast this morning, while sitting at a Breakfast Inn table, reading the Saturday edition of the Denver Post.
A lot has already been written and I just want to add a few thoughts.
This thing rocks.
If you like reading, hate the idea of magazines and newspapers piling up in the house, want something that is portable and very user friendly, take advantage of Amazon's new pricing on this product and buy a Kindle. It is my first eReader and I have nothing to compare it to, except for the text on a computer screen. Of those two, there is no comparison - the eInk on the Kindle's screen is perfection and makes this the perfect reading device. Add the Kindle cover with the slide out light that is powered by the Kindle and you have a nice little device that does anything you may desire concerning an ebook. With just a little bit of fiddling it can handle any format. Do some simple searching about on the Internet and there are free applications to easily convert epub docs to the Kindle's mobi file format. There are also free applications to make the Kindle "Public Library Friendly."
